Detroit Lions Camp Pep Rally Articles

Posted in Detroit Lions on August 27, 2009 by bigoranged

Every year during training camp our Detroit Lions release stories on their website about our coaches or players. These articles usually talk along the lines of “This player really knows what he’ll do to excel this year.” From a coach it might say “Defensive coordinator knows what he’s looking for.”

These stories always give us Lions fan the illusion that everything is on the right track for our team. Shoot, how could we be negative about a team that has players and coaches that know what they want this year?

I used to get mad at these stories and wax cynical, but you know what, at least the organization is trying to make us happy! I want three months of sunshine, lollipops and smiles before the reality of the regular season sets in.

So please Detroit Lions, please keep feeding me this sugar at your trough of optimism. Some day the preseason optimism may line up with a regular season reality. This could be the year!

Detroit Lions Sign Billy Cundiff

Billy Cundiff was just signed by the Detroit Lions. I was hoping for Swayze Waters, but he injured a hamstring in practice and well Jason Hanson is down.

But Billy Cundiff? Why Billy Cundiff? It kind of reminds me of some obscure classic sitcom that gets played in prime time on a cable channel. Like if I heard WGN was going to play reruns of Maude, my first reaction would be, “Uhh why?” Aren’t there better options?

Am I saying Billy Cundiff is Maude aka Bea Arthur? Well yeah kinda!

Crazy – Confident Or Kool-Aid Drinkin?

Posted in Detroit Lions with tags on August 22, 2009 by bigoranged

In 2007 our Detroit Lions pulled off a 7-9 record. That was a huge leap from previous years. Then in the preseason of 2008 our offense and defense clicked great and our Detroit Lions went 4-0 in the preseason! A previous year we’re one game shy of hitting .500, then a preseason of undefeated football – Dude I was pumped!

Then sixteen games later, as a fan I’m looking at an oh..oh..oh.oh…0-16 record.

Somewhere between the end of 2008 and the middle of 2009, my moods must of altered about 4000 times! I went from confident to crazy in a six week period!

Maybe my emotional experience as a fan is different. Yet, maybe it’s not!

I know the feeling of a new season. Reading the perky articles on about how the newest quarterback and coach and draft picks are excelling in training camp. Letting the dismal memories of a previous year fade in to oblivion as new aspirations arise for a new year. Yes, I’m writing about the Detroit Lions, not Chicago Cubs.

Let’s face it, our organization can put out some really good Kool-Aid to drink. You know what? I drink it every year!

Yes, a rookie QB completing a pass against our third string practice squad does equate to him being ready for starting day. You can’t deny this well verified fact!

Another unverifiable fact. Sometimes Lions fans have to drink the Kool-Aid to keep sane. We have little to be confident about, and without it, we might go crazy.

Equilibrium Is In The Leg

Since 1992, our Detroit Lions have gone through many things. We’ve seen Barry Sanders drive defenses crazy. As fans we’ve seen coaches like Fontes, Mariucci and Marinelli come and go. Matt Millen tormented us for nearly a decade. This organization has given us fans very little consistency to depend on.

In the midst of this seeming eternal transition, we’ve been able to count on one thing. Jason Hanson!

Our heads could go dizzy with the constant change of coaches, running backs, quarterbacks and brown sacks we puked in during the Millen era. The only thing to give us a sense of equlibrium as fans has been Jason Hanson.

What can we count on when our team marches 80 yards down the field, only to be stopped in the red zone? A three point field goal! By who? Jason Hanson of course.

Our Detroit Lions march 30 yards down the field after the defense gets a interception and they score a touch down. Who’s been there to score our PAT’s since 1992? Jason Hanson.

I’ll admit it, I’ve developed a certain amount of emotional attachment to Jason Hanson. When he gets injured or if he ever decides to retire, I’m going to feel a little off center emotionally.

Here’s to you Jason Hanson. Our figurative mountain, sun, moon, the constant that won’t go away. May your leg live on forever as you continue to give the organization and us fans a sense of equilibrium.

Brett Favre Comes Back – I Think

How can we trust that this guy is really coming back? Maybe he’ll go back on his word again.  I’ll let the screen shots speak for themselves.
